The power of EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is that it shifts your nervous system into a parasympathetic state.

The power of EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is that it shifts your nervous system into a parasympathetic state. In common parlance, this state is referred to as Rest & Digest, or Rest & Restore. Meaning, you must be in this state in order to digest properly (digestive issues, anyone?), and to restore your energy and to heal! (Yes, read that again, it’s very important!) This is also the state where you experience mental clarity and build your capacity to respond effectively to life’s challenges.

EFT is not therapy in the conventional sense, but rather a self-regulation technique that calms the nervous system, facilitating access to your inner knowing, and aligning you with your deepest wants and needs. It’s akin to quieting the noise in and around you, so you can hear what you know to be true for you.

How does tapping work?

EFT uses acupressure, by gently tapping with your fingertips, on 9 meridian points on the face and body, while focused on an upsetting issue. The tapping communicates to the brain’s emotional centre of the limbic system that, even though triggered, you are safe, can let your guard down, and relax. The induced state of calm overrides and nullifies the previously disturbing association, and effectively rewires your brain. Depending on the severity of the issue, this dissociation may be quick, or take repeated sessions.

Tapping is a mind-body and trauma-informed approach valued for its ability to tone the Vagus nerve and discharge and resolve unprocessed trauma. This is how you free yourself from the emotional patterns arising from past experiences, that otherwise keep you locked into fear, limiting beliefs, and unwelcome physical symptoms, thoughts and feelings.

There are ample videos on YouTube teaching people how to do EFT on their own, or to tap along with provided scripts. Indeed, many people are introduced to EFT via these videos.

So why work with a certified EFT Practitioner when you can access help for free?

On one hand, the psyche protects you from accessing material that it doesn’t feel ready to look at, or does not feel safe to access.

On the other hand, there is a risk tapping along with a video could cause upsetting feelings to arise that you don’t feel ready to address. We all possess a veritable pandora’s box of unprocessed emotions and it’s best to be situated in a safe and trusting relationship with a skilled practitioner, who can attenuate the flood of buried emotions, and help you integrate them at a measured pace.

Like Humpty Dumpty, we’re afraid if we fall off our defensive wall, no one will be able to put us back together again! And indeed, this unconscious reflex is necessary for self-preservation. The ever vigilant psyche continues this protection until it senses skillful help is at hand. And that when uncomfortable feelings arise, you have proven tools to calm yourself. This is where EFT shines as a tool you can use anywhere, any time, on your own.

EFT is ever respectful of your pace and need for safety. Meeting whatever arises with love and acceptance is the key to freeing yourself of limiting patterns.
